Are you good friends with money? Here are six ideas for becoming closer.
I am taking a course, and there was a lesson by Melissa Mae Dillon about making friends with money. She explained that just as a friend wouldn't keep wanting to come around if we were always upset with them for not coming enough, not spending enough time, and not bringing enough value, money won't either. If we want to attract money, we need to treat it like a friend we are eager to see, trust to come when needed, appreciate the time we have with them, and not take for granted.
The assignment was to analyze my relationship with money. I don't get upset with money and don't have negative thoughts about it. However, I don't really think about it at all. Once I had secured enough income to know all of my bills would be covered each month, I set up automatic payments on all my accounts.
Putting my bills on autopay was a way of stopping my negative relationship with money. It helped me reach a place of neutrality with it. I no longer worry or stress out about money each month. I trust I will have enough and don’t think about it other than to glance at my account once or twice a month just to make sure my balance isn’t dipping too low to cover everything.
The thing is, after I improved my relationship with money from negative to neutral, I stopped working on it. We’re on friendly terms, but we are not close. I will say a little prayer of gratitude when I make a sale, or a client books an appointment, but I don’t usually take the time to really sit in gratitude, and I often don’t even acknowledge the other ways money and its equivalent come to me.
This lesson by Melissa Mae taught me that I need to work harder on improving my relationship with money. I need to be friendly and more inviting. I need to be more appreciative of all the ways money comes to me, all it does for me, and all it allows me to do for others.
Here’s what I will do to make money a close friend:
Express Genuine Gratitude Regularly
Instead of a quick acknowledgment when money arrives, I will take a moment at the end of each day to feel true gratitude. I will reflect on how this money supports my family, allows me to pursue my calling, and helps me create a positive impact in the world.
Acknowledge All Forms of Abundance
Money doesn’t always show up as cash in the bank. It comes as gifts, unexpected discounts, free resources, and opportunities. I will recognize and appreciate all these forms of abundance. I will keep a money journal to reflect on all the ways I am blessed with abundance.
Talk to Money with Love and Respect
Just as I would speak kindly to a dear friend, I will speak positively about money. I will affirm that money is a welcome presence in my life and that I trust it to flow freely and generously.
Spend with Intention and Joy
I will shift my mindset from seeing spending as something I have to do to recognizing it as a joyful exchange of energy that I am blessed to participate in. I will bless the money I spend, knowing it will bless others, circulate, and return to me multiplied.
Set Abundance Goals
I will include money in my vision for the future. I will set clear, inspired intentions about how I want abundance to flow into my life and trust money to support those goals.
Create Rituals to Celebrate Abundance
I will create simple rituals to honor the presence of money in my life, such as creating and maintaining a money alter or regularly doing abundance meditations. These rituals will reinforce my friendship with money.
I realize that instead of thinking of money as a good friend, I have just been thinking of it as something I need to have to pay the bills. In doing so, all I have attracted is just enough to pay the bills. It’s time to become good friends with money and invite it happily into all areas of my life.
