Common Rocks and Their Metaphysical Properties

I often get messages from people interested in crystal healing who do not have access to metaphysical and rock shops or don’t feel they can afford to fit crystals into their budget.  I suggest that they go for a walk and look for rocks they are attracted to and start with those.  While gemstones and crystals are beautiful and have wonderful properties, it is not necessary to spend money in order to work with this healing modality.  The common rocks and stones we find in our neighborhood are often the best for our personal grounding and protection.  Here are five common rock types and their metaphysical benefits.

Conglomerate

Conglomerate

Conglomerate – Conglomerate is sedimentary rock.  It is coarse grained and composed of fairly large, rounded fragments within other material such as quartz or calcite.  It can increase energy and vitality.  It induces clarity, inspires confidence, and aids in the success of new ventures.  It is a good stone for unifying people towards a common cause.  It is supportive of the lower Chakras and aids in grounding.

Granite

Granite

Granite – Granite is a light-colored, coarse-grained igneous rock composed mostly of quartz, feldspar, and plagioclase.  It is a good stone to use for protection and grounding.  It increases clarity and helps to differentiate between egoic thoughts and the higher self.  It aids in bringing balance to one’s life and relationships.  It is also a stone of abundance, good for attracting more of what you want and need in your life.

Limestone

Limestone

Limestone – Limestone is a sedimentary rock that is found in shallow bodies of salt water, most commonly from the ocean.  It encourages and amplifies healing on all levels.  It helps us to connect with our inner-child and induces positivity and optimism.  Lighter colored stones help to connect with Spirit and clear and balance the Aura.  Darker colored stones are good for grounding and strengthening the Root Chakra.

River Rock

River Rock

River Rock – River Rock refers to a mix of different stones, usually from the quartz or agate family, found in riverbeds.  They come in a variety of colors including white, grey, black, brown, pink, and yellow.  They are smooth from the constant flow of water.  Their association with water makes them good stone for supporting a go-with-the-flow attitude and helping to adjust to life changes or inspire change.  They can help calm inner turmoil and offer clarity and direction. They can also help to ease fear, anxiety, and depression.

Sandstone

Sandstone

Sandstone – Sandstone is a sedimentary rock made of sand, held together by quartz, calcite, feldspar, or clay.  It can support treatments for bone disorders and disorders and infections of the eyes.  It can also support healthy hair and nails and reduce water retention.  Sandstone has a calming quality and boosts creativity.  It helps to bring clarity and supports healthy relationships.  It clears and balances primarily the Sacral Chakra, but depending on the color can support other Chakras, as well.  It can also aid in Earth healing work.
