Can Reiki Invite Negative Energy or Open Portals?

August 25, 2025 Tracie Talbott

Reiki has brought comfort, peace, and healing to millions of people around the world. As someone who has spent years practicing, teaching, and experiencing Reiki firsthand, I understand how healing and life-changing the energy can be. I also understand that sometimes people have negative experiences, and it’s important to approach these situations with compassion, understanding, and a willingness to explore alternative explanations.

I recently read an article (on a private platform and protected by a paywall or I would link to it) by a woman who believes that receiving and practicing Reiki invited negative energy into her life and opened energy portals that allowed dangerous entities access to her energetic body.  She felt that Reiki had ruined her life and caused her irreparable harm.

Her article did not explain why she believed Reiki was to blame for her troubles and she did not answer my inquiry about how she came to this conclusion.  However, I want to address the fears she expressed about Reiki and how it affected her life.

The Misconception About Portals and Entities

The concept of “portals” being opened during a Reiki session is not part of traditional Reiki teachings. Reiki does not summon or invite entities of any kind. However, if a practitioner also incorporates other modalities such as tarot, mediumship, or channeling during a session, it is possible that the energetic space may feel more open or ungrounded if not handled properly. This is not because of Reiki itself but because of the blending of different practices without appropriate boundaries or understanding.

If someone has had negative experiences that they attribute to "portals," it may be helpful to:

  • Ground and Protect Their Energy: Regular grounding exercises, visualization techniques, and protective affirmations can help restore a sense of safety.

  • Seek Spiritual Counseling or Guidance: A trusted spiritual counselor, energy healer, or mentor can help process these experiences and provide perspective.

  • Clear the Energy Field: Smudging, sound healing, or working with protective crystals like black tourmaline or selenite can help clear any lingering energy.

Reiki Does Not Invite Negative Energy or Open Portals

Reiki, by its very definition, is universal life force energy. It is pure, positive, and always aligned with the highest good. Reiki cannot and does not invite negative entities or harmful energies into a person’s energy field. The idea that Reiki opens "portals" that need to be closed is not aligned with traditional Reiki teachings. It is a healing energy that works to balance the recipient's energy system.

Why Do Some People Have Negative Experiences After Energy Work?

Negative experiences following a Reiki session can happen, but they are not caused by the Reiki itself. Here are a few possible reasons why someone may feel discomfort after a session:

  • Emotional and Energetic Detox
Reiki can bring buried emotions, unresolved trauma, and unprocessed energy to the surface. This release can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially if a person has been holding onto emotional pain for a long time. This is not a sign of harm. It is the body’s natural way of clearing out what no longer serves it.

  • Spiritual Awakening or Expansion
When someone experiences a sudden spiritual awakening or opens up to higher levels of consciousness, it can be disorienting. Visions, vivid dreams, or heightened sensitivity to energy can feel intense or even frightening if someone is not prepared for this shift. These experiences are not caused by “portals” being left open but are instead a sign of spiritual growth that requires grounding and support.

  • Misalignment of Practitioner and Client Energy
Every Reiki practitioner carries their own vibration, and while most practitioners work with integrity, sometimes the energetic connection between a practitioner and a client may not be a perfect match. This does not mean the practitioner was harmful or malicious, but it does suggest that the client may be better served by finding a different healer who resonates more closely with their energy.

  • Psychosomatic Response or Fear-Based Beliefs
Our minds are powerful, and what we believe deeply influences our experience. If someone begins to question their spiritual practices or feels fearful after hearing negative stories, that fear can manifest as physical, emotional, or even spiritual distress. Fear can create the perception of danger, even where none exists.

  • Unresolved Mental Health Challenges
While Reiki can support mental and emotional well-being, it is not a substitute for mental health treatment. If someone is struggling with deep-seated trauma, anxiety, or depression, these challenges can surface during or after energy work. Without proper mental health support, these experiences can feel frightening or destabilizing.

Addressing Concerns About Reiki Practitioners

The article I read also raised concerns about practitioners who rush through Reiki training and lack adequate experience. It’s true that not all Reiki practitioners are created equal. Reiki is a discipline that requires ongoing practice, self-care, and personal integrity.

However, this does not mean that quick certification courses inherently produce dangerous practitioners. Some of the most skilled and compassionate Reiki Masters I know have completed their training in a short time but committed themselves to a lifetime of practice, learning, and spiritual growth.

It is always a good idea to ask questions before choosing a Reiki practitioner:

  • How long have they been practicing?

  • What kind of ongoing training or self-care do they engage in?

  • How do they ensure their own energy is balanced before offering Reiki to others?

A skilled practitioner will be happy to answer these questions and ensure that the client feels safe and supported.  Read my article 5 Questions to Ask Your Reiki Practitioner for more advice about what to questions to ask.

A Call for Compassion and Understanding

I truly feel for anyone who has had a negative experience that left them feeling vulnerable or unsafe. These experiences are real and valid, and they deserve to be acknowledged with compassion. But it’s also important to differentiate between Reiki itself and other factors that may contribute to these experiences. Reiki is a practice of light, love, and divine healing. The energy itself is never harmful.

If you or someone you know has had a difficult experience with energy work, I encourage you to:

  • Seek out a trusted Reiki Master or spiritual mentor to help process the experience.

  • Practice self-care, grounding, and protection to restore balance.

  • Explore alternative explanations for what may have happened with an open mind and heart.

When approached with respect, discernment, and loving intention, Reiki is a safe tool to facilitate healing and wholeness.  If you would like to try Reiki, book a distance session with me here.
